First Japan Collaboration!

Last November I have a collaboration project with Japanese artist Yukinaga Chibana (@somesenka). Yuki mostly create artwork with bingata, a traditional Okinawan fabric decorating technique which have a characters like batik colet in Indonesia. We are met in a collaboration project initiated by Gallery Idealoka in order to Immediacy of Image #3 exhibition along with four another artist. The collaborators in this project are come from Indonesia and Japan with different tendencies in creating a visual works. We have Koji Kato who’s mainly create a new media art, Rendy Pandita with his digital drawing background, Shin Asato who’s work mostly with painting, Wibisono Tegar through photography, Yukinaga Chibana with traditional bingata technique, and yours truly with wood cut printmaking.

This project starts with a discussion within all artists involved after previously presents their art practices. Link and matching the art practices of the artists are one of the method taken by this collaboration project.

Yuki and I had a conversation about how the law enforcement runs in our each countries. I engage him to step into my perspective about this institution through historical events and nowadays issues.

Yuki introduce me with his HOKA character that represents ‘the other’, which then I borrowed to visualize it on my print work.

This figure of a girl called HOKA, “She has no personality. Her motif is a mob character, it was designed from some anime in Yuki’s childhood memory, its abstract image. Because she has no personality, she can become a canvas for bingata.”

On the other hand, I suggest Yuki to respond the Bhayangkara from this following printmaking work, “from the subjective interpretation of an artist based on the perspective of society which is a phenomenon in several parts of the world towards institutions that are now being highlighted”.
